Advice please?
Hello my loves! I am asking all of you gorgeous people for advice - I'm planning to sign up for one of those file-sharing services (yousendit, gigasize, sendspace, etc.) so that I can upload some copyrighted music totally legitimate uncopyrighted files to share with friends. Anybody have experience with these kinds of services? Any advice on which one is best, or what the different features are?

After I've got the account, I'll probably post my list of songs totally legitimate uncopyrighted files so that my f-list peeps can make requests...

Anybody have any info or advice? *bats eyelashes*

Sendspace is free and you can upload up to 300MB and there's unlimited downloads, unlike the previously-superior YouSendIt.

Ooh, thanks for the quick response! So have you used sendspace to upload? Is it fairly intuitive and user-friendly? Do they send you annoying spam or anything? And have you used gigasize? Their free account claims to offer 1.5 gigs.

I just used it last night and thought it was really user-friendly and easy. No spam. Never used Gigasize. But if you're just uploading songs, you shouldn't need more than 300MB, yes? Since songs are usually about 1-5MB, give or take...?

True, true. I'm just greedy, I suppose. *g* But you're right, that should be enough. And I guess even a whole album (of cat photos) zipped would be smaller than 300 MB. Is that limit per file, or total amount it gives you per user? If it's per file, is there any limit on the number of files that you can upload?

Oh, cool, thanks for the info! Okay, I've now uploaded one file onto sendspace, and it was super easy. It's "Gone Daddy Gone" by the Violent Femmes. Umm, I mean, it's a totally legitimate, non-copyrighted file. Umm, a photo of my pet cat. That's the ticket! If you're interested, here's a link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/41hq8w

We'll see if this works out, but it seems great - I didn't even have to register or anything! Much easier than I expected, and you're right, a very clean interface.

Have you heard the Gnarls Barkley cover? (File is an .m4a.)

That's the iTunes format, right? I haven't downloaded iTunes onto this computer yet, but I have been meaning to. So I've downloaded the cover, and I shall get iTunes so I can play it! Thankees! I'm working on converting my song list into a text file now so I can post it. Only a small portion of my music collection is actually on my laptop, but it's still about 1700 songs. One of these days I've got to rip the rest of my cds.

Yay for sharing! This is going to be fun.

Well, I was going to recommend sendspace, but the two above me got to it first. So I'm just here to say I swiped the song pictures of your cat. Loverly!

Oh, excellent, so I guess the link and download worked and all! I'm glad you're enjoying the cat photo. ;)

So the sendspace love is unanimous so far - good to know!
Zekkass: Boingzekkass on October 22nd, 2006 07:56 am (UTC)
Well, I used to use rapidshare, and I use upfile for the really big files, but so far sendspace has been perfect for my own music posts cat photos. ;)

Hee hee. I've started a new euphemism! Go me! I'm working on formating my list of cat photos right now, then I'll post it and we can have a cat photo trading party. :D

If you need an excuse for a cat photo post, this is/was one of the more interesting memes out there for such a thing.

A list of cat photos? Oh lord. How many photos do you have?
Sky: [j&w] omgskyblue_reverie on October 22nd, 2006 08:24 am (UTC)
Oooh, I like that meme! I don't have as many cat photos as you do, m'dear - or at least not as many on my laptop at the mo. My directory lists 1759 cat photos, but I have many albums that I have not uploaded to my computer. Cat photo albums, I mean, natch.

Umm, my list appears to be 53 pages long. I'm not sure how to post that here. Hmmm. Ideas?
Zekkass: Reject Realityzekkass on October 22nd, 2006 08:28 am (UTC)
I collect photos, and my f-listers tend to post music at least once a week, so I'm constantly adding to the list. (As of right now, 3,604 items, and that's not counting what's on record/hasn't been snagged from my photo albums.) Want anything?

Upload it as a .doc file on sendspace?
Sky: [stephen] windswept sunglasses animatedskyblue_reverie on October 22nd, 2006 08:44 am (UTC)
Upload it as a .doc file on sendspace?

Ahh! Brilliant! Of course! Yes, I'll do that. And somehow when I re-cut and pasted it, it's now only 43 pages. Mysterious, that. Oh well.

Yes, I'd love to trade some music cat photos - do you have a list of your own you could post or upload or email me or something?

And now I must to go bed... will upload list in the morning and post a link.
Zekkass: Morningszekkass on October 22nd, 2006 09:06 am (UTC)
Er, not at the moment. As soon as I can figure out how to get a list, I'll get it to you. (Windows Media Player = not a happy bunny.)

Good night!

*Wanders in hoping to find good downloading advice* I really don't keep any cat photos on my computer... I guess I'm just a photo album completest :) I always buy the whole thing.

Of course, now that I've finally got a computer with a cat photo burner, maybe I should start getting into the cat photo trade.

Sendspace, you say?
Skyskyblue_reverie on October 22nd, 2006 11:38 pm (UTC)
Hello hon! Yes, you should definitely get in on the cat photo trading action! Sendspace was very easy to use. Later this evening I'll upload Mozart's Requiem and some Rush albums for you - is .wma format okay for you?
ennui_blue_liteennui_blue_lite on October 22nd, 2006 11:46 pm (UTC)
You are just the loveliest! I guess we'll find out if .wma is okay or not, because I don't know jack sh*t about this stuff.
I'm going to attempt to rip some stuff onto my laptop tonight and figure all of this out, okay?
Skyskyblue_reverie on October 22nd, 2006 11:54 pm (UTC)
Sounds good. If you have Windows Media Player on your machine (which you should if you have windows rather than mac) then .wma will work for you. If you have a mac, let me know and I'll convert to .mp3 first.
ennui_blue_liteennui_blue_lite on October 23rd, 2006 12:38 am (UTC)
Yep, i've got Windows (or, "The crash-o-matic", if you will), so I've got Media Player.
Skyskyblue_reverie on October 23rd, 2006 03:50 am (UTC)
Ha! "Crash-o-matic"! Hee.

Okay, I've got some links for you (and anyone else who wants):

Rush's Presto
My favorite songs from it are The Pass, Presto, and Available Light.

Mozart's Requiem

Both of them are zip files of the album in .wma format. Let me know if you download them ok!

ennui_blue_lite: house-smileennui_blue_lite on October 23rd, 2006 04:24 am (UTC)
Thank you! I'm downloading them now. I'll tell you all about what I think as soon as I get the chance to listen.

Again, thanks so much!
