Trek Fic: Of Sails and Ships and Sealing Wax (Pike/McCoy)
Title: Of Sails and Ships and Sealing Wax (Part 2 of To Talk of Many Things - yeah, guess that means this is now a WiP. Whoops?)
Authors: mga1999 and skyblue_reverie
Fandom & Pairing: Star Trek Reboot (aka AOS, ST XI, etc.), Pike/McCoy
Rating: PG-13-ish, for sexual innuendo (*gasp*)
Spoilers: None
Warnings: None
Word Count: around 7000
Summary: The further correspondence of Leonard McCoy and Christopher Pike.
Disclaimer: Any resemblance to anything whatsoever is purely coincidental.
Authors' Notes: From skyblue_reverie (the loud one): Okay, so this thing is definitely going to be a series. I've cheated on my Jim/Bones OTP repeatedly now, and I'm planning to keep right on doing it. I REGRET NOTHING. From mga1999 (the quiet one): I want to THANK everyone for the wonderful feedback on our fic. I have read every comment, but am letting skyblue_reverie handle the replies because she is so much better at it than I am. Really. What started out as a 'we could do this for fun for ship wars' has turned into something that has taken over both of our minds. We have been having so much fun writing this together and look forward to writing more. So THANK YOU!

I was SO EXCITED to see this again because I just *lovelovelove* your Pike and your Bones and this fic in general.

But now I am CRYING ON THE GROUND because that was a terrible cliff hanger and I want to know what happens!!

Thank you so much, bb! Oh no, don't cry on the ground! We just posted the next part, because I couldn't stand to see you cry.

Oh, I missed this the first time around. I'm so glad I went back looking for something to read during lunch.

Damn, but the image of these two together making out is just...yeah, it's hot. In many ways, it makes so much more sense than with Jim--even though I'll never stop being a Jones gal. Pike is sensible and all command-y, and McCoy is demanding and passionate, what a fabulous combination of personalities and skills and life experiences and hotness.

Loved the interchange of messages, the honesty of them. And ouchy! for the last few. I'm off to read Part 3.

Hi you! Thank you so much for the lovely comment. I'm glad you went back looking too! :)

Oh hell yes, Pike/McCoy is hot. I love your observations about their personalities - so true! And it's a very different dynamic - with Jim/Bones I tend to write Bones as the more mature, sensible, down-to-earth one. With Pike/McCoy - well, McCoy is the immature bb in that relationship, and Pike the more stabilizing influence. Or something. :p

Hi again!

I'm starting to feel a bit bad about how far behind I'm getting on your fic, hon! I love it, I do, but life is absolutely stripping away all the time I should be spending on the internet. Damn you, life! *shakes fist* and *hugs you*. Sorry I'm so tardy, love.

I'm still feeling Pike out as a character, mainly in preperation for writing him for you in the near future, and I'm glad I've got such a great view of him - you and mga really flesh him out, and give him a real straightforewardness, even when he's vulnerable.

I love the idea that he and Bones went out to dinner, and to the pier, spent real time together, and then Pike goes back to his computer and *then* starts really relating to Bones. Just like I said before, they're at their most intiment when they're across galaxies.

Your Bones, of course, is pitch perfect: "Good god, man, stop apologizing!" Heh. Also this: "But most of all, it was good to breathe fresh air, walk on real Terran soil, and spend time with someone because I genuinely wanted to be there with them." That just strikes me as so Bones - not just the romantic sentiment, but the idea that setting foot on Terran soil makes him honestly happy. It's a facet of his character that I just adore, in either version of the character.

""dreamy cerulean eyes." There are bad fanfic writers in Pike's class? :)

Some of the language in this fic is gorgeous - Pike's letter where he talks about his previous relationships (one or two with a starship) so clearly lays out his character to me. There's so much depth regarding his fears, his feelings, his past, how he's grown as a person. Canon Pike was never even close to this real of a character.

And the thing is, I've already wrecked one relationship by prioritizing my work above my partner. I don't want to make that mistake again. But Jim... well, he needs me." Oh Jeez. I can't even begin to explain how much I love this. The idea that Bones and Jim have this enormous responsibility to one another, even at the expense of other
relationships both warms and breaks my heart. Oh *boys*! When I read the first fic, I got the feeling that Jim was in it without being in it (if that makes sense - I blame my 12 hour workday if it doesn't :) ) was because he has to be a part of everything. But now I can see - he has to be a part of *Bones*. And, to some extent, Pike. Which...yeah. Love.

Hotness on couch! *wants to see live action version, pls*

"Or if we've both been acting like teenage girls, does it mean we're going steady? Do they still call it that?" Snerk. I like the idea that the 50s somehow happened again in the future.

This is getting long, so I'll take a moment to say that I love the idea of there being a group like "Terra Prime" in the fandom. I haven't kept up with ST lately - is that your own creation, or did it come from elsewhere? Either way, I adored the way you used it to show that Bones and Pike can have differning viewpoints, and still be adults in a relationship, falling in love.

Or can they? Is that why Pike stopped writing? You can't cliffhanger me there! I have to go to bed in a half hour, and I don't know what haaaaappppeeeeennnned!

*grumble* Well, I guess Im just going to have to come back tomorrow. And I hope I can catch up, eventually. And I love you. So much. *hugs*

Note: Please excuse spelling/format issues. I still don't have microsoft word. This weekend, I swear it. :)

Hello my darling! I am sorry it took me so long to respond to this.

I'm not going to be able to do justice to your epic comment, but thank you so much! I love your observations about Pike and McCoy and Jim too. Definitely the Jim-Bones relationship is an important one in this fic, and becomes even more central in later parts. :)

Terra Prime is a canon organization, but we've definitely adapted it for our purposes. We just kind of dropped that one reference to it so far, but I think we're going to do more with it later. So many plans and plots!

I love you hon, forever and a day. ♥

Finally getting to this! I feel bad about reiterating what I said on AIM, so I hope that's not disappointing, but: I enjoyed this! I like watching Bones try to build Pike's confidence back up, I like the idea of Pike as a one-night-stand kind of guy in the past, the similarities drawn between he and Kirk. I LOVE Kirk hacking into their email and then apologizing, and also giving Pike the "you hurt my friend, I break your face" talk. I also enjoy watching Bones and Pike do this little two-step, watch them falling in love but also trying hard not to be mushy about it, figuring out what they want to call this "thing" they're in, getting comfortable with the fact that it's a relationship. And, like I said, I love-love-LOVE that they have political differences re: Terra Prime, because that feels realistic, and it's something I find really difficult as a writer, to write characters whose politics are in sharp contrast to mine. And Bones' explanation... it feels real, I know I've heard people say similar things. And the cliffhanger! Omg. <3

Thank youuuuuuuuu! No worries for reiterating, it's just sweet of you to fb me so much.

The similarities between Kirk and Pike are SO much fun to play with, and we haven't even really scratched the surface there yet. Kirk just kind of took on a life of his own in this fic, interfering in ways we did NOT originally plan, but he just kind of insisted. I love when the characters get notions of their own, you know?

McCoy and Pike - I don't know that I've ever written a love story like theirs before, sort of a measured, settled, mature adult love story, YKWIM? It's awesome.

And I love the political differences too, although I feel the need to publicly state what I told you on IM: LEN'S POLITICAL BELIEFS ARE NOT MINE! REALLY! I can't speak for mga1999, but I definitely am more aligned with Chris than with Len on this topic. It's a challenge dealing with that aspect of McCoy's personality, and some of the stuff that goes along with it, the racist/xenophobic remarks and so forth, but I really wanted to deal with that, not just sweep it under the rug. We've only just barely introduced the topic so far, but it will definitely be popping up again.

Anyway, once again, thank youuuuuuuuu! *hugs*

Ow, ow, ow....evil cliffhanger. Love the gradual shift towards a real relationship - food and sex and politics.....

Yeah, there are LOTS of evil cliffhangers in this, but at least for a while, you won't have to worry about being left in suspense. ;)

Food and sex and politics... well, I like two of those, and two out of three ain't bad, right? :p

Thanks for the comment, bb.
