Remix/Redux Anyone?
So I've never before participated in the Remix/Redux challenge (not sure I ever qualified in one of their fandoms before) but checking the fandom list, I qualify in Star Trek Reboot this year, and I think I might do it.

I would love, love to get some of you lovely people on my f-list to participate too (especially the Jim/Bones people!) - anyone interested in doing this with me?

The basic idea is that you're assigned to another person, and you pick one of their fics to "remix." You can write it from a different POV, you can expand one scene greatly and only focus on that one part, you can pick up with the ending and keep going where it left off, you can do an AU version of the story - basically, from what I can gather, anything's fair game as long as there is some actual overlap between the events of the original story and your remix. It's supposed to be kind of like doing a fanfic version of a fanfic.

You can find out more info at remixers_lounge. I'm gonna be poking around there myself to get more details. It sounds super-fun, though.

Because I've never done it, I feel like I only have a vague idea of what a remix is. So I'm reading some posts on it which are helpful and thinky:

some thoughts

more thoughts

still more thoughts

Is there any faq or rules post out there somewhere that I've missed? (ETA: here's the rules post from a previous year's challenge.) Or more thinky thoughts that might be helpful to me? If so, please either share with me here in comments, or link me - I'd be very very grateful!

ETA: from the comm, here's the rule to qualify in a fandom:

First, just to clarify: to qualify in a fandom you must have written at least five (5) stories of 500 words or more, or a minimum of seven (7) stories of 100 words or more in that fandom. These numbers must exclude previous remixes, and co-written stories. This means that if an author has six (6) Supernatural stories of 100 words, and another two in that fandom of 500 words, that author would qualify in Supernatural. However, if the same author has four (4) Merlin stories of 500 words, and one (1) that is only 400 words, that author would not qualify in the Merlin fandom. This is the same rule as last year, and will not be changing.

Also: here's a list of fandoms that will for SURE be part of this year's challenge, and more might be added.

I've done the fest before, for Harry Potter and it was one of the most challenging and awesome things I've ever done.

You should do it.

I'm going to. ; )

Ooh! What fandoms are you signing up for this year? And because I'm not totally clear on the rules, what if you, for example, only sign up in Harry Potter and I'm assigned to remix one of your stories - can I pick any of your stories, even one in a fandom you didn't sign up for?
tourdefiercetourdefierce on February 20th, 2010 07:12 pm (UTC)
As I remember, if I sign up for only HP then you can only remix my Harry Potter. You'll also get to choose one story (if any) that you don't want to be remixed. When you sign up, you write your "remixer" a letter. It tells them what you want, what you don't want and someone could be more explicit there-- "Please don't write in this fandom because I won't read it. I'm not in that fandom anymore." Or something to that effect.

This year, I'm going to sign up for Star Trek as what I WANT to write but someone can remix HP for me or ST for me if they want.

Actually, you may be matched by Harry Potter, but if your assigned remixer wants to remix a story in another fandom you've written in, that's allowed, because it's not a gift exchange.

There you go! I haven't done this in a while. Lol.

Is that true even if the fandom they want to remix is not on the list? Like, for example, if someone is matched to me because of Star Trek, could they still choose to remix one of my Jeeves & Wooster stories (which is a yuletide fandom and therefore not eligible as a remix/redux fandom)? Not that that's a problem, I'm just curious.
topaz_eyes on February 20th, 2010 07:39 pm (UTC)

Yup. The matching is to guarantee that there is at least one major fandom in common. But your remixer can choose a J&W fic if one catches her/his eye.

I qualify in a couple of Yuletide fandoms, but I don't expect anyone will remix those at all, heh.

It's huge fun, but it is a different thinking process compared to writing a regular story. I sometimes think of it as a fanfic of a fanfic. I've remixed a full-length fic, 2 ficlets and a drabble. I switched the POV of the full-length fic, and expanded the other 3. I found the story will sort of tell you how it wants to be remixed, so I look for a story that clicks with me. Sometimes it takes a couple of passes through your assigned writer's work to find it. You do have to be prepared for writing anything, because you're matched only by fandom. Only in my first year did I get to write one of my OTPs. OTOH it gives you a chance to play with characters you might not have considered writing before.

The nice thing is that because it's not a gift exchange, you have more freedom to experiment. Another nice thing is that you don't have to write in the matching fandom if the author has a story in a different fandom you really want to do. I've always written in my matching fandom.

I definitely recommend you read some past remixes and original stories to get a feel for the process and see what others have done. I know a couple of authors who combined 2 original stories into 1 awesome remix, authors who remixed poems, one author who did a WS Burroughs-style cutup remix--anything goes, really.

Ooh, I was hoping to hear from you, because the remix you did in House fandom (I think it must be the full-length OTP one you're talking about) is still one of my favorite fics in any fandom, ever. It was my exposure to the remix concept and made me want to someday do a remix challenge.

I used to be so much more controlling and possessive of my fics, and couldn't stand the thought of anyone messing with any of my babies, but now it sounds really fun and appealing. And also, I am totally an OTP person, but a little less freakishly so than when I first started in fandom (part of that has been because of ship wars - I've had to read all different pairings for that, even ones that -gasp- break my OTP) so I think I could handle that aspect, as well. It would make for an interesting challenge, that's for sure!

I'll have to look for some original fics and remixes to read to get some exposure to the concept. Is there some central archive or list of them all, sorted by fandom?

Yep, A Love Restrained (All The Broken Pieces Remix) was my first. Still my baby. :-)

The last 3 Remix/Redux challenges were held on LJ:

Stories are tagged by fandom, author and character.

Inorite? Like, there's no guarantees who you'd be assigned to remix, or who'd be assigned to remix you, but I would LOVE, for example, to see what you might do to one of my stories if you remixed it.

Thanks for the tip!

Oooh, glad to hear you're doing it, and you're very welcome! Are you going to do Star Trek or some other fandom, or more than one?

Oh, bb, you know better than to issue THAT kind of challenge to me! Talk about waving a red flag in front of a bull (and okay, I'm not male and I think bovines are color blind anyway but YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN).

Oh the rainbow text worked??? I can't see it on my compy! It just looks like plain black text and I was all *sadface*. Yours is rainbow, though. *scratches head*

Anyway, this is only the beginning of my campaign of seduction, bb!

Yes it did! Did you use the rainbow text site?

Sky: [star trek aos] jim warning labelskyblue_reverie on February 23rd, 2010 04:33 am (UTC)
I used this rainbow text site, which has worked for me in the past, but not this time. One thing I did differently was set the background color to the same hex code as my lj background color - maybe that broke it somehow.

Y HELO THAR, new friend! Ooh, that's awesome that you're going to do it. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Definitely write more Star Trek! Especially if it's of the Kirk/McCoy variety! ;) Have I read the Trek fic you've written? I shall have to go and check forthwith!
