The Expanse

So omg, I got completely pulled into this show by accident. (Thank you, [personal profile] kat_lair!) And it's SO GOOD. And now I must pimp it like mad spread the love.

The opening intro is so beautiful, especially the music. Here it is:

It's a gritty sci-fi show with intertwining storylines. (Disclosure: it's based on a series of books that I have not read.)

There's three main factions in this world - Earth, the imperial grande dame, Mars, the former colony, now a power in its own right, and the Belters, the underclass who belong to neither planet but make their homes on space stations and outposts, mining asteroids primarily for the benefit of Earth or Mars corporate interests. The Belters have an awesome creole patois and their lot in life pretty much sucks, kept under the boot heel of the "Inners", the planetary interests. There is civil unrest and politics and conspiracies and everything is on the brink of war between Earth and Mars, revolution by the Belters, or both.

The main storyline, at least at first, is a hard-bitten detective noir story with a semi-corrupt cop (Detective Miller, played by the amazing Thomas Jane) on Ceres station being tasked to find a missing rich girl who's gotten involved with the Belter cause, and return her home to Earth.

I won't say more about the plot to avoid spoilers, but seriously, the show is amazing. Soooo different than Star Trek, but hits a lot of the same buttons for me. The Blade Runner influences are obvious (and I love it!). Also reminds me of Firefly in some ways. But definitely darker and grittier than Trek or Firefly.

And the cast is just fantastic, and diverse.

I maded a graphic for Detective Miller, who's my favorite. ETA: now with Chrisjen Avasarala awesomeness!

ST Discovery Graphics

My first attempt at a graphic using .gifs! I used canva.com to create it (as an mp4, the only video option for free accounts), then giphy to convert it to gif; seems like it worked ok. Anyone have recs for other gif resources? Is giphy good or should I be using something else? Or other graphics resources in general? I have gimp but for making this kind of graphic, canva is so much easier. Is there something else I should try?

ETA: now with more Discovery graphics inside!

Trek thing: spinoff show idea

This is another thing I made for the Trek challenge comm. It's an idea for a spinoff show starring Jason Isaacs as Lorca. Beware the spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery S1 and S2 inside! I'm serious, people, don't click that cut unless you've seen the show. And, if you haven't, drop everything and go watch it now! Totally worth it, I swear.

Also, if this spinoff could happen for realsies I would NEVER EVER ASK FOR ANYTHING EVER AGAIN.

Trek Graphics

Archiving here some of the creations I've made for [community profile] starfleet_hq, the Star Trek Challenge Community, which by the way YOU NEED TO JOIN if you haven't.

I'm especially proud of that last one. I love the Disco crew. And check out the diversity! Among these cast members, I count three women, three people of color, two gay men, and two religious minorities, just off the top of my head. Props to CBS for embracing diversity!

And now some moodboards, the first I've ever made. I used canva.com; I highly recommend checking it out - it's free and incredibly easy to use! (I also used canva.com for the lyrical graphics above)

Trek Fic: (Caught Between the) Scylla and Charybdis

(Caught Between the) Scylla and Charybdis (6335 words) by skyblue_reverie
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: James T. Kirk/Leonard "Bones" McCoy
Characters: James T. Kirk, Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Crew of the Starship Enterprise
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Creepy, I hope, away mission, Disturbing Themes, Prompt Fic, Spook Me Multi-Fandom Halloween Ficathon, POV Alternating

The away team tries to survive an away mission gone (especially) wrong.

Their orders had been to do a quick scouting mission, stay out of sight of any locals, get back up to the Enterprise and make a report about local conditions. Routine. Easy. Safe. Leonard snorted. They should all have known by now that there was no such thing as a routine, easy, or safe mission.

On depression

My depression has been really bad lately. I know there are many of us who struggle with it on here. I ran across this poem and it really resonated with me, maybe it will for some of you too. All my love and hugs to my fellow strugglers.

Having it Out with Melancholy
Jane Kenyon - 1947-1995

If many remedies are prescribed
for an illness, you may be certain
that the illness has no cure.
The Cherry Orchard

When I was born, you waited
behind a pile of linen in the nursery,
and when we were alone, you lay down
on top of me, pressing
the bile of desolation into every pore.

And from that day on
everything under the sun and moon
made me sad—even the yellow
wooden beads that slid and spun
along a spindle on my crib.

You taught me to exist without gratitude.
You ruined my manners toward God:
"We're here simply to wait for death;
the pleasures of earth are overrated."

I only appeared to belong to my mother,
to live among blocks and cotton undershirts
with snaps; among red tin lunch boxes
and report cards in ugly brown slipcases.
I was already yours—the anti-urge,
the mutilator of souls.

Elavil, Ludiomil, Doxepin,
Norpramin, Prozac, Lithium, Xanax,
Wellbutrin, Parnate, Nardil, Zoloft.
The coated ones smell sweet or have
no smell; the powdery ones smell
like the chemistry lab at school
that made me hold my breath.

You wouldn't be so depressed
if you really believed in God.

Often I go to bed as soon after dinner
as seems adult
(I mean I try to wait for dark)
in order to push away
from the massive pain in sleep's
frail wicker coracle.

Once, in my early thirties, I saw
that I was a speck of light in the great
river of light that undulates through time.

I was floating with the whole
human family. We were all colors—those
who are living now, those who have died,
those who are not yet born. For a few

moments I floated, completely calm,
and I no longer hated having to exist.

Like a crow who smells hot blood
you came flying to pull me out
of the glowing stream.
"I'll hold you up. I never let my dear
ones drown!" After that, I wept for days.

The dog searches until he finds me
upstairs, lies down with a clatter
of elbows, puts his head on my foot.

Sometimes the sound of his breathing
saves my life—in and out, in
and out; a pause, a long sigh. . . .

A piece of burned meat
wears my clothes, speaks
in my voice, dispatches obligations
haltingly, or not at all.
It is tired of trying
to be stouthearted, tired
beyond measure.

We move on to the monoamine
oxidase inhibitors. Day and night
I feel as if I had drunk six cups
of coffee, but the pain stops
abruptly. With the wonder
and bitterness of someone pardoned
for a crime she did not commit
I come back to marriage and friends,
to pink fringed hollyhocks; come back
to my desk, books, and chair.

Pharmaceutical wonders are at work
but I believe only in this moment
of well-being. Unholy ghost,
you are certain to come again.

Coarse, mean, you'll put your feet
on the coffee table, lean back,
and turn me into someone who can't
take the trouble to speak; someone
who can't sleep, or who does nothing
but sleep; can't read, or call
for an appointment for help.

There is nothing I can do
against your coming.
When I awake, I am still with thee.

High on Nardil and June light
I wake at four,
waiting greedily for the first
note of the wood thrush. Easeful air
presses through the screen
with the wild, complex song
of the bird, and I am overcome

by ordinary contentment.
What hurt me so terribly
all my life until this moment?
How I love the small, swiftly
beating heart of the bird
singing in the great maples;
its bright, unequivocal eye.

Trek Fic: Into Shadows

Just posting here because I have finished Into Shadows, which is my "fix it" for Into Darkness. It pretty much follows the same events of Into Darkness but with a Pike/McCoy relationship and much more of Pike and McCoy, along with Kirk. And less of... pretty much everyone else. And no permanent major character deaths. So there, JJ.

Anyway, if you want to read it, it is 10 parts long, about 20k words total, and the series is on my AO3, here.

As you were!
