So, um.
Yeah, idek the details of the latest kerfuffle, but I gather that it's got something to do with LJ and Facebook and Twitter and cross-posting between them or something.

So, just so you all know: I would never ever cross-post anything from LJ (mine, yours, anyone's) to any other site, just like I would never cut & paste your f-locked entries to show someone who wasn't on your f-list.

I'd appreciate it if you'd refrain as well. K? Awesome! :D

Also: I have a dreamwidth account, with the same username there as here, so feel free to friend me/subscribe/circle me/whatever the hell it's called over there, although idk if I'll be moving there or not. Right now it's just a placeholder.

Man, I hate it when this shit happens. I don't want my fannish buds to be split up into different places, and I really don't want to have to keep up with two journaling sites!

LJ, WHY MUST YOU SUCK. REPEATEDLY.

Apparently, it's like, now you can cross-post your comments to Facebook? Which, I have no idea why you'd want to cross-post your comment to fb...? But the reason people are mad is because you can cross-post your comment in someone else's flocked entry, and when your cross-posted comment shows up on FB, it includes like 60 words or characters or something (or is it 160? idk) of the post, even though the post was flocked.

I still don't get why you'd want to x-post a comment. I mean, what is that? "ZOMG, facebook friends, I am SO BRILLIANT. JUST LOOK at me saying 'Yes, this'! And this animated .gif I made of Michael Jackson eating popcorn!" *scratches head*

Also, there's an issue with pingbacks and flocked entries, but I don't know what it is.

Yeah, I agree, I totally do not understand why you'd want to x-post a comment to fb or twitter or anywhere else.

Anyway apparently there's some kind of fix going around and I tried to do it so hopefully it worked?

Also - I love your totally appropriate icon. :D

It's not an actual fix; it just hides things for you when you're posting, or for people who are viewing your journal in your style.

[info]cleolinda has posted some screencaps of what happens.

Thanks for the clarification!

This whole thing has me very cranky. :P ;)

Also, Icon Love.

Same here - I don't plan on doing it either :)

Every time LJ screws up like this, a few more people permanently trickle over to Dreamwidth and it makes me sad that fandom is getting split up. I am guessing that probably there will be a tipping point where enough of my f-list is over there that I'll migrate as well, but for now I'm staying put.

Here's the way to get around it:

1. Go to Journal > Journal Style

2. Go to Customize your theme

3. Go to Custom CSS

4. Copy and paste .b-repost-item {display:none} (make sure you're just getting the bolded text) into the Custom stylesheet

5. Save changes

Now not only can you not crosspost comments, but anyone viewing your account can't either. This doesn't get rid of the reposting option when you're making a new entry, but at least that one's easy to avoid.

Hope that helps! For instance, at the moment I could cross post this to FB/twitter because you haven't changed the settings. Once you put in the change, it restores your account to normal...ish. I checked it on mine; once I did so, I could no longer comment with the FB/twitter options.

(And if you already got this from the jim_and_bones conference sorry for the repeat).

Thanks for this! Yep, it seems to be popping up all over my f-list, but that's a good thing. I hope the word spreads fast. I applied this fix (at least I think I did it correctly) so hopefully the tickybox options for reposting are gone when you comment on my lj.

A reminder: This only works for people who are viewing your journal in your style. If they're viewing it in their style or the LJ default, the buttons are still there.

Also, anyone who has crosspost on as a default? Can't uncheck the buttons if they can't see them.

Sigh.

LJ hates me and this is the latest evidence of that. :0 My Facebook and LJ accounts are not only separate, they're two different worlds entirely for me. Gaah, if something from here got posted on Facebook I'd be outed! :) Will see if I can do the fix mentioned above. Sheesh.

You and me both, no one on fb has any idea that this side of my life exists, and I'd like to keep it that way.....
Sky: [bg] oh my[info]skyblue_reverie on September 3rd, 2010 02:50 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it seems to be really common for those of us in fandom to use LJ for fannish stuff and FB for real-life stuff. And uh, definitely never the twain shall meet.

I don't use FB for anything other than games. But I play those games with my parents.
